Linux software

irrlichtproject says:

I thought it might be nice to have a thread for Linux users to discuss their preferences, tips, and goodies.

I myself presently use Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin.  I'm considering moving to the newest LTS, as I enjoy Ubuntu a lot.  Though, I notice that most chipware seems to be for different or older distros such as Debian.  I'm not a software developer, just a musician;  Is it because of issues with ease of use that programmers seem to prefer these older platforms?  Or is it out of dedication to a particular system, eschewing newer things for what they're used to?

Regardless, I've had some fun playing about with Milky Tracker, and Propellerhead REASON 5 (running in WINE, along with Ableton Live being what I use more for non-chip music.), though I've not been able to get WINE to behave with the necessary software to use the 64mb cart I got from nonfinite on this computer and have to resort to using my sister's old WinXP/7 rig for transfers from it to a thumb drive.

How about you folks?  Find any problems in Linux systems related to our shared hobby?  Any workarounds, fixes, sweet little programs you may've found that you're willing to tell us all about?

Found an interesting program on the net.

Just throwing this out there for anyone that might be interested, found a neat little program called Dunc's Algomusic 5.6.  It's an algorithm music program.  You type in words, be it something like a title or plain outright gibberish even, and it somehow formulates music.  One song might sound just horrible but other songs you come across might be a fun interesting one.

Prototracker

kometbomb says:

Made a new tracker. Works in browsers (desktop builds coming).

Try online: http://kometbomb.net/prototracker/
Source code: https://github.com/kometbomb/prototracker

The goal:

* cut all the fat from the "tracker" and see what is the minimal possible "tracker"
* no instruments, macros instead. instrument "settings" are set from the macro instead of instrument parameters
* the "synth" is just a wavetable with 256 predefined one-cycle waveforms with various timbres
* there are no more than 4 channels, that was enough in 1991 and should be enough in 2016
* the simplicity and limitations will give extra inspiration and unexpected results

There is a longer manifesto but it's a bit weird.

Some tips:

* key shortcuts are very close to Protracker: right side modifiers play the song, F3/F4 copy and paste track, enter/backspace to play current row etc.
* explore the waveforms, there are 256 of them so at least one should sound nice
* very fast play rate (150+ Hz) helps if you have to do stuff on two separate rows in the macro
* you can put effects in the note column by holding down shift
* if you can't fit everything on one row (trigger note, set volume, set macro) try to set some params before triggering the note
* there is no vibrato, instead create a macro for that and use 1xx and 2xx

You can also easily share the tunes:

Anyone ever done this before?

Thanks!

Nanoloop android/ios feature request

HazNoChip_Chris says:

Hi Oliver,

I have used android app those day and definitely I like it. And I remember why I have not used much in the last years. I stop using it for the lack of sync... So I decide to open a post to fill a feature request, I'm sure there is other people here which may have the same feeling. I use your software for years, and I use it with sync with other gears. This last one is difficult to sync, so to play it with another gears it is tricky. I know today you are busy and each project take time, but I need to fill it somewhere.

Here are my feature request, I think those stuff could be liked by other people too :

- please enable midi sync in the code, I understand it could take time to enable it, but it could be really cool to be able to play with the another midi gears in sync ;
- add a tempo with dot, like 120.1 to be able to sync it manually ;
- add the /1 /2 /4 /8 timedivision, really usefull IMHO
- add the trig condition
- be able to change parameter of each step fully, today we can increase OR decrease value per step but not both and it is really different than putting a completely different parameter set per step, so today for me each step sound similar because of it, I can do a bit of parameter lock, but not fully use it ;
- add a "tempo lock/seqlock" to be able to change project on the fly keeping the bpm and the sequencer position, like in gb/gba
- a zoom on the sampler, to put the start and stop without click ;
- and last one a bandpass on the sampler wink
- and veryvery last one fx send per track with a global fx ? like a delay ? it is minimal a delay ?

Cheers

Nanoloop Android Sample length

HazNoChip_Chris says:

Hi,

has anyone also noticed that on Android Nanoloop plays user samples only to half? I'm using single cycle waves and it sounds strange. But also drums. The sample locators don't reach the end of the samples. So they won't play to 100%. Any ideas?

AliaSSoundS says:

Is it worth it? I really want to get it, but I'm not sure. I know that I'll probably really like it, but there's no demo for me to try (that I know of) and it's really expensive, so I don't want to take the risk. Can anyone here vouch that it's actually worth the money?

yoyz2k says:

I've begin to write a nanoloop clone.
it is available on github.

It is not as good as 1.6, 2.7 or the iOS/android apps.
The idea is to have a opendingux, gp2x, gcw zero apps for this kind of music apps.
Someone had try to use it yesterday, and I think it is clean enough to let you dig the source.
Unfortunately I have not the skill to implement good FM or good VA today...

Don't hesitate to grab the source and tweak it.

Plugin vs Tracker

Chipbacher says:

Hi all

This is my first post, so apologies if it's on the wrong topic of the forum.

I've been recording live rock music for most of my life and now getting into producing chipmusic renditions of baroque music.  I'm quite well-versed in using DAW software so played with Audiothing Minibit to produce the following recordings...

Vivaldi - Winter (Largo) - YOUTUBE
Bach - Violin Concerto in E Major (Allegro) - YOUTUBE

I had fun making them and now interested in going for a more authentic approach.  What are the main advantages/disadvantages I would expect from approaching usage of a tracker given my background?

Many thanks
Chipbacher

In this video I check out the SOCAL Labs 8-bit Treat VST plug-ins released by Tracktion developers. These plug-ins are available in 32 and 64 bit and as AU, VST, and Linux VST.

I play demos on some famous video game MIDI files and then examine each plugin in depth.

Quite quirky but definitely some good stuff here, esp. for chip junkies smile

Check out the plug-ins here:
