JS80TRX - Browser chiptune tracker

tubesockor says:

Hi!

Just some days ago, Sonic Charge released JS80TRX as a fun project. It is a browser based chiptune tracker with three voices and eight patterns. All for the joys of limitation smile All songs can be shared easily, since the tune itself can be encoded into the URL.
When I heard about it yesterday I immediately created a little tune, inside the Safari browser on my iPhone.

Hello

Just wanted to share with you, I've made a tracker with custom FM engine (6 operators, 24 voice polyphony), now released as a free and open-source software.

See how it sounds : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bT__3KI3Lt4&t=1s (there are other demos on my youtube channel)

It has a custom reverb algorithm which can be disabled for simpler chiptunes smile

If you're interested into trying it, here's the download link : http://fmcomposer.org/fr/download.php

i had an old acer aspire one lying around that i installed mint xcfe on. i hope to make it into a mini chiptune/tracker station. however, I seem to be having issues with installing emulators (like KiGB) and LGPT. Nanoloop iOS/Android confusion

mojilove says:

Maybe someone can point me to a resource or explain this to me in a way I can understand.

I've had nanoloop on various Android devices for something like 5 years now, currently 3.9.1.

I really like the 'right amount' of limitation on the program, and I can see it'd be genuinely useful to my work and play, but I've never really got over a problem in the main pattern editing window, and I'm not sure if I'm using it wrong or just not getting the paradigm. I've been using computers in music for coming up for 40 years, and maybe I'm just stuck in the wrong brain thinkings. Or just stupid.

In the main pattern editing window, as I understand it, the letters on the lower bit represent instruments, and the numbers 1-8 patterns (I've seen these referred to as channels, though I don't quite get why, maybe this is relevant).

I create (for example) 3 instruments, bass, lead and kick on a,b and c, all on pattern 1. Fine. I change to pattern 2, and create 3 different patterns using the same instruments. In my mind, it seems I should now be able to hit 1 and hear the first 3 patterns together (to me this is 'pattern 1'), hit 2 and hear the second pattern together, but it will only change the pattern of whatever instrument I've got selected, everything is instantly jumbled up and I have to select each instrument and pattern to get them all playing together again (it's like every time i want to hear a pattern I have to reassemble it, or program it into the song window), which seems madness and totally breaks up what should be a really fast workflow.

I just don't get how to work with it, get frustrated and end up ditching it for another year just because of this strange (to me) behaviour, then try 'one more time'...

What am I doing wrong or not understanding? Or is everything as it should be and I'm just not compatible?

Thanks in advance
Andy

Medusa 2 (VSTi for Windows)

Cangrejo says:

Features:

- Low-bit envelopes
- LFO for pulse-width modulation, FM, and Granularity
- Vibrato
- Pitch Attack
- Arpeggiator with basic chords
- Volume keyscaler (Volume decreases with increasing pitch)
- Note glide
- Key velocity
- Pulse, Sine, Triangle, Saw, and Pseudo-Noise (NEW)
- FM Mode for Sine, Triangle and Saw (NEW)
- Granularity for Pseudo-Noise (NEW)
- Monosynth Mode (NEW)

So, here she is, in her second (actually third) incarnation. You will note that the interface hasn't changed much, but the goal was always to keep it simple. Here's a run down on the new features:

Clicking on the Medusa picture will now change the OSC mode between square, sine, triangle, saw and pseudo-noise. Each has it's individual bit-depth, based purely on what I thought sounds good (excuse my egoism here). The OSC mode also controls the attribute you change with the 'Pulse' slider / LFO.

Mode Bits Pulse effect
------------------------------
Pulse 4* Pulse Width
Sine 8 FM
Triangle 6 FM
Saw 4 FM
Noise 5* Granularity

*) The waveform is 1-bit but uses an envelope of the respective depth

The FM effect is very simple and just increases the amount of a +1 octave modulator on the carrier. It mimics the sound of a decreasing pulse width to some extend, so it goes nicely with the familiar PW modulation in pulse mode.

For the pseudo-noise mode, the Pulse slider affects granularity (how 'dense' the noise will sound). Medusa will also interpret the note input as sample rate in this mode, which means you can shade the noise higher or lower.

Finally, Medusa now has a Monosynth mode. It's activated automatically if you up the Glide slider. If you set it to a very tiny amount, the portamento isn't noticeable, and you can use her as a simple Monosynth.

Enjoy, leave a comment & suggestions!

Once again thanks to iLKke for the new graphical elements and little-scale for the hosting.

And a special note for ant1:
I'm really sorry the custom arp mode didn't make it in. It was glitchy as hell, it will need a lot more time to figure out how to convince SynthEdit to do this properly. Sorry sad

(Don't get me wrong, all that can be pretty useful, but is ultimately easy to find)
- Memes, unhelpful comments

Do post:
- Single hit (clean) oldskool synths, toys and drums
- Outlandish and interesting things
- VGM instruments are ok
- Specialized libraries
- Stuff you had to dig for

BLEO says:

I am just trying to get LGPT up and running - the actual program is running fine. I even seem (sometimes) to be able to put soundfonts in folders and have them show up and play....

but I don't think I understand how samples are supposed to work.

I have loads of 16 bit samples, which I am trying to load into "samplelib" under the assumption I can then import them to a project.

about 90% of the time I transfer them by usb, try and open a folder and the entire thing just crashes. then when i look back in the folder the files are gone.

should I only be loading folders rather than folder trees?
Is there a size limit on individual folders in samplelib?
Is there a limit on the amount of files you can have in samplelib even?

I was sort of thinking i could cart a huge chip library around with me and just load 32mb of samples into each project... but that doesn't seem to be working. I have loads of (tiny) single cycle waveforms which do at least show up in import.... but don't seem to actually import.
On the other hand, one small folder of samples loaded on it's own now seems to work perfectly....

is a 32GB card just too big? i have an SD to Memory stick duo adapter, or am I doing something stupi/expecting too much?

tearing my hair out a bit..... any help gratefully received....

I've recently began building Snes/Genesis inspired tracks in FL Studios. I've always been a huge fan of Video Game music and Chiptunes since I discovered Maktone in the late 90's. Over the years I've seen chips being built many different ways using various hardware and software. I was wondering what the overall view on building what my buddies refer to as 'Studio Chips'. is it cool? is it lazy? does it lack anything other programs have? does it really matter? please I would love to know what you guys think.

Hello, i must promote this good C64-like tracker for Android devices, although i use now mostly for chiptune defMON (C64/Vice C64), Sidtracker 64 (iPad), nanoloop mono/LSDj (Nintendo) i searched a week ago for chiptune tracker on Google Play and i found this tracker Fake SID, which is surprisingly really good.

I know Android is forever bad platform, because there is still relatively big latency for realtime audio, but with this tracker i have no problems. Maybe month ago i searched for C64 emulator on Android to run defMON, but smartphone screen is really small for this and even some emulators don't have keyboard layout i need to use it and on iPad is emulators forbidden.

You may ask me why i use tracker on Android, so i can explain it pretty easy, because i don't always bring outside/to work iPad and even if i do, sometimes during travelling is full bus so i don't have space to take out iPad and work in Sidtracker 64, but for example my Lenovo K6 Note's display is not that small, it could be also used for some creative things.

Dark_Bit_ says:

I recently bought MiniBit from AudioThing, which is an 8 and 16-bit synthesizer. At first I wasn't really sure if it would fit my needs, but I have to admint, for 20$ you get something really cool! I actually almost used it exclusively on my first released track (you'll find it under Constructive Criticism, I posted it there smile ).

Of course, there are tons of very good free plugins and trackers, but since I'm coming from a DAW background, MiniBit allowed me to make chip sounds but the tweak them with modern effects.

All in all, I highly recommend the software, if you're working with plugins and want to invest a couple of bucks. Believe me, it's worth it.
